10 reasons to give ELECTRO-CALF energy and electrolyte supplement to calves, lambs, kids, crias and foals

Veterinary researchers Constable and Nappert have listed recommendations for electrolyte solutions which are considered the ‘Gold Standard’ for reviewing electrolyte products. While all commercially available products contain sufficient glucose (aids sodium and water absorption), a recent review showed that most ANZ products show various degrees of non‐conformance to the research standards. ELECTRO-CALF is a balanced formulation with the best fit to the “Gold Standard”.

Although all alkalising agents (bicarbonate, citrate, propionate acetate,) have similar effects, acetate has several advantages over bicarbonate and citrate. Acetate is a source of energy, also helps Na and glucose to be absorbed in the small intestine, will not alkalise the abomasum (avoiding bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine), and does not interfere with milk clotting. For these reasons acetate is the preferred alkalising agent for routine or preventative use. Noting bicarbonate addresses bloodstream acidity more rapidly than acetate (i.e. metabolised more slowly than bicarbonate).

For prevention or routine application with infant animals presenting only mild dehydration, isotonic solutions are needed. Animals under higher hydration stress may require hypertonic solutions which provide higher nutritional support with higher glucose levels as well added electrolytes while still complying with the maximum parameters of the “Gold Standard”. Whether used as a Hypertonic or Isotonic solution, ELECTRO-CALF is effective in replacing lost fluids and electrolytes, without disrupting milk curd formation in the abomasum and avoids the potential for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine by maintaining a lower pH in the gut.

“Strong ion theory” encourages the use of products that deliver an excess of strong cations (sodium and potassium) relative to the concentration of strong anions (chloride) to help correct a portion of the acid‐base balance in the blood. “Strong Ion Difference” or “SID” is calculated as [Na+] + [K+] – [Cl‐] and should fall in the range of 60‐80 mEq/L for a quality oral electrolyte product. While most commercial products fall within a variable range (e.g. 20‐76mEq/L), ELECTRO-CALF complies with the SID recommendations providing values of 60 and 80 mEq/L for both Isotonic and Hypertonic solutions respectively.

After water, sodium is considered the most important electrolyte. Most commercial products are there abouts however there are stark variations. ELECTRO-CALF provides sufficient sodium and complies with the “Gold Standard” for either Hypertonic or Isotonic solutions. Inclusion of sufficient sodium is also confirmed by SID values within the required 60‐80mEq/L range.

Most commercial products avoid Acetate for ease of manufacture and storage because of hygroscopic issues. A unique blending technique is used which avoids caking of product when stored as directed after opening the pail. ELECTRO-CALF, using acetate as the primary alkalising agent, complies with the “Gold Standard” for either Hypertonic or Isotonic solutions as well as solves the hygroscopic issues when stored as directed.

Most commercial (OTC) products are within range whereas some provide insufficient or excessive amounts; the latter being counterproductive especially where there is a risk of hyperkalaemia. ELECTRO-CALF provides adequate levels to at least meet the minimum requirements of the ‘Gold Standard” for either Hypertonic or Isotonic solutions.

Any stress event including scours favours an overgrowth of bacterial pathogens and therefore an imbalance to the gut microflora. Adding a high-dose of host-specific probiotics helps to restore and maintain gut micro-flora balance around stress events.
